A MATTER OF LOST FREQUENCIES

Alla fine degli anni 60, in Italia, gli operai di una fabbrica incolparono i proprietari della fabbrica stessa del fatto che il frastuono provocato dai macchinari aveva causato loro la perdita della sensibilità delle frequenze intorno ai 4000Hz. La causa portò ad un dibattito circa l'utilità della capacità di percezione di quella frequenza: i proprietari sostennero che l'ambito frequenziale del parlato non comprendeva suoni di così alta frequenza, pertanto non si doveva considerare il difetto come motivo invalidante. Gli operai dimostrarono che molti segnali d'allarme, anche all'interno del luogo di lavoro, comprendevano i 4000Hz nel proprio ambito frequenziale. Di questo caso ci dà notizia in un suo libro il magistrato italiano Raffaele Guariniello. Ovviamente non è questo un caso di per sé emblematico: chissà quanti procedimenti analoghi sono stati intrapresi, né è importante sapere come si sia poi risolto. Il caso serve solo da "ispirazione" per una installazione sonora e visiva, nella quale la frequenza sottratta agli operai venga simbolicamente restituita e di conseguenza valutata all'interno del panorama sonoro di tutti i giorni.

A Matter of Lost Frequencies consiste in una stanza bianca, nuda, all'interno della quale viene diffuso un suono della frequenza di 4000Hz, e viene simbolicamente mostrato anche visivamente, attraverso un intervento sulle pareti, in che punto della scala dei suoni udibili questa frequenza si trovi.
Le persone che entreranno nella stanza saranno immerse in un ambiente sonoro monotono e persistente, troveranno (proiettata su una parete o mostrata in altro modo) documentazione sulla vicenda, sui dati fisici a cui si fa riferimento e sull'obbiettivo e sul significato stesso della nostra installazione. Al momento nel quale usciranno dalla stanza per entrare in un altro ambiente sonoro (all'aperto, o in un'altra sala), il suono percepito all'interno della stanza permarrà per qualche minuto all'interno dei loro orecchi, mischiandosi con i suoni del nuovo ambiente.
E' in questa permanenza che consiste il vero intervento acustico che questa installazione propone.

At the end of the sixties, in Italy, the workers of a factory accused the factory’s owner that the noise provoked by the factory,s machines caused them a hearing loss around the frequency of 4000Hz. There was a legal debate about the utility of the capacity to perceive that frequency in the everyday life: the owner told that the frequency range of the speech is not so high, so this loss is not to be considered a damage. The workers demonstrated that a lot of alarm signals, also inside their work place, contained frequencies around 4000 Hz.
Of this legal debate we can read in a book of the Italian magistrate Raffaele Guariniello. Of course this is just an “example” - a lot of similar situations happened in similar circumstances: we want just to “give back” symbolically the lost frequency to the listeners and, consequently, suggest to evaluate it inside the everyday soundscape and so to make a though about the relationship between sound and power in the work’s world.

A Matter of Lost Frequencies is to be realized into an empty room, into which is to be diffused a 4000Hz sound, and symbolically exhibited , visually by a sign in the walls in which point of the range of the audible sounds this frequency is placed.
Listeners entering the room will be immersed into a monotonous and continuous acoustic environment , will find (projected in the wall or exhibited in other ways) the documentation relative to the circumstance, to the physical data we refer to, and to the goal and the meaning of our installation.
When they'll leave the room to enter into another room or in the open space, the 4000Hz sound they listened will remain some time in their ears filtering the sounds of the new soundscape.
It is in this filtering and permanence that our sound installation really consists.

The sound is disturbing, we held it, in this case, only for a few seconds at the end of the footage to give an idea of what we're dealing with.
